La masacre se produjo el lunes pasado e impactó de manera particular en Surcorea, a raíz de que autor de
esa tragedia nació en el país. Todos aquí en Corea del Sur rinden sus más sentidas condolencias a los familiares de las víctimas inocentes y comparten la pena con el pueblo estadounidense y con los otros países de donde procedían las víctimas. No hay realmente palabras ni acciones que puede ofrecer consuelo a las familias de los que murieron en este horrible incidente. Las cicatrices psicológicas dejadas por la tragedia no se borrarán fácilmente. Nuestros pensamientos también están con los padres que perdieron a sus amados hijos. Esperamos sinceramente que el estado de Virginia y todo Estados Unidos se recuperen de esta terrible tragedia y recobren la normalidad en sus vidas.Aunque ahora se ha informado que el tirador era un residente extranjero que había vivido en Estados Unidos por más de 10 años, el hecho de que él haya nacido en Corea del Sur golpea especialmente a los habitantes de este país. La nación entera reza desesperadamente para que este incidente espantoso no genere un conflicto racial ni étnico. Deseamos también la recuperación rápida y completa de los heridos. El tiroteo fue una acción aislada de un individuo muy perturbado. Aunque el motivo de su matanza no está aún claro, no parece haber sido motivado por cuestiones raciales o étnicas, lo cual es un hecho afortunado para las relaciones entre Corea del Sur y EE.UU. así como para el bienestar de los coreanos étnicos que viven en ese país. Los lazos entre Estados Unidos y Corea del Sur en las áreas de comercio y seguridad nacional son indestructibles.Las comunidades coreano-estadounidenses en todo Estados Unidos están bajo una severa conmoción y con temor. Muchos estudiantes coreanos han dejado el campus o sus vecindarios por temor de posibles venganzas. Algunos incluso temen que coreanos-estadounidenses sean sindicados como responsables de ataques de terror. Pero lo que se necesita ahora no es temor sino calma y mente serena. El presidente surcoreano Roh Moo Hyun envió el martes palabras de consuelo a su contraparte estadounidense George W. Bush y otro mensaje al día siguiente dirigido al pueblo de ese país. Grupos cívicos surcoreanos se reunieron en la tarde del miércoles en la Plaza de Seúl, frente a la municipalidad de la ciudad capital, para realizar una vigilia con velas por las víctimas de la masacre de Virginia y marcharon a la embajada estadounidense para entregar un mensaje conmemorativo.El gobierno surcoreano debe hacer todo lo posible dentro de sus posibilidades para hacer frente a esta tragedia y aminorar cualquier consecuencia por el incidente. Los diplomáticos surcoreanos en Estados Unidos deberían idear medidas multi-facéticas con el gobierno de Washington para brindar un ambiente seguro para los coreano-estadounidenses, con el fin de que puedan continuar estudiando y cumpliendo con sus actividades laborales. Asimismo, las comunidades coreanas en EE.UU. deberían prestar más atención a cómo las generaciones más joven ven a la sociedad estadounidense, si ellos sienten la presión por triunfar o si se les da demasiada libertad sin la supervisión apropiada. Surcorea y EE.UU. deben trabajar juntos para que este trágico incidente no afecte negativamente asuntos importantes para ambos países, como el TLC bilateral y la excepción de visado para los surcoreanos, entre otras cosas.Una vez más, todo Corea del Sur y KBS transmiten su pesar y el profundo pésame a familiares y amigos de los fallecidos y heridos.
